Everything You Are Dying to Know
Water
The essential base solvent; it carries the water-soluble ingredients and is critical for the function of the emulsion system. Skin hydration is foundational to well-being.
Why We Use It
It is necessary to craft our lotions.
Olive Oil Squalane
A highly stable, vegan oil derived from olives. It closely mimics human sebum (a natural skin oil) and functions as a phenomenal emollient to trap moisture.
Why We Use It
We like this for its skin barrier function. It also gives the cream a luxurious, non-greasy feel, ensuring your skin remains supple and soft. As someone with a skin barrier that is always in need of protection I couldn’t pass up using this oil.
Emulsifying Wax
A complex blend of fatty alcohols and surfactants (usually Cetearyl Alcohol and Polysorbate 60) is used to create a stable oil-in-water emulsion.
Why We Use It
This is the structural integrity of the cream. It chemically binds the oil and water components, ensuring the rich Shea Butter and water base never separate. Oil and water don’t mix…unless you have an emulsifier.
Shea Butter
A fat extracted from the nut of the African shea tree. It is rich in fatty acids like Stearic (35-45%) and Oleic (40-50%), known for providing deep conditioning and moisturization.
Why We Use It
Everyone knows Shea Butter is good for the skin, so it is a must in our Twilight Body Cream formulation.
Glycerin
A natural compound derived from vegetable oils. It is a powerful humectant, meaning it literally draws moisture from the air and deeper skin layers to the skin’s surface.
Why We Use It
Who doesn’t want more moisture!?? We like ingredients that enhance the product quality and adding this gives you even more moisture power.
Preservatives
Note: As of the publishing of this article, Optiphen™ Plus is being phased out. You may see the difference in ingredients on your product. But we want to include this information until all the formulas are updated to the new preservative. If you want to learn more about our new preservative and the change, check out this post.
Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbic Acid – These ingredients make up what is known as optiphen™ plus. It serves as a broad-spectrum preservative in cosmetics and personal care products, protecting against bacteria, yeast, and mold.
- Phenoxyethanol: A common preservative that works against bacteria.
- Caprylyl Glycol: An emollient that also helps preserve the product and gives it a smooth finish.
- Sorbic Acid: Provides antifungal and anti-mold activity, which is especially effective in slightly acidic products (pH below 6)
Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, and Potassium Sorbate – These preservatives are used in the Aloe Vera Extract and Shitake Mushroom Powder Extract to prevent spoilage.
- Sodium benzoate: A widely used preservative, particularly in acidic foods like soft drinks, to inhibit microbial growth.
- Potassium sorbate inhibits the growth of mold, yeast, and bacteria, effectively extending the shelf life of various foods, such as baked goods and beverages.
- Citric acid: An acidifier that lowers the pH of a solution, which is essential for the optimal activity of sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate.
- Benzyl Alcohol: A common preservative that also acts as a solvent.
- Glyceryl Caprylate: An emollient and antimicrobial ingredient effective against bacteria.
- Glyceryl Undecylenate: A component from undecylenic acid that has antifungal properties and provides stability to the blend.
We are switching to this option as it aligns more closely with our values of being as natural as possible.
Aloe Vera Extract - Aloe Vera Leaf Juice
Derived from the leaf of the Aloe plant, it is widely used for its soothing, cooling, and profound moisturizing properties.
Why We Use It
With its powerful anti-inflammatory and calming abilities, it is crucial for a product intended to nourish and restore skin after a long day.
Shiitake Mushroom Powder
A powdered extract from the Lentinula edodes mushroom. Topical mushroom extracts are believed to stimulate the skin’s natural renewal process.
Why We Use It
The renewal properties are an added bonus to Twilight Body Cream and we thought you might like it.
